Sculpture Complete! Scroll down for the finished product. This was a super-sculpey polymer clay structure that I began in late November. He measures at about 6" tall.

Here is the basic wire structure, a 14-gauge steel wire, joints tied together with copper wire, (seen at right shoulder), and then covered with a cheaper grade of polymer clay to immobilize the joints.

After baking the under-clay, the sculpture is covered with aluminum foil to bulk it up. I use cheap polymer clay as supports during the construction process.

At this point the real stuff is added, I leave hollows for the eye sockets.

More bulking and detail work. The eyeballs are white Sculpey III already baked.

Detail work and removal of support structures.

First bake and sanding

Added clothing, put through second bake. I was almost done painting him when I knocked him over and lost part of his mohawk.

The broken piece was lost somewhere among a mass of boxes in the studio corner, so I had to do a repair job with fresh sculpey. Since the sculpture was already painted, I couldn't put him through another bake. I removed the raw sculpey
fix, baked it, then glued it on.

Finally completed! I still need to shoot real photos, but these will suffice for the moment.

And yet another sculpture in the works. This little fluffy creature will be part of a larger sculpture. Regular sculpey, baked and painted. 4" high.

Chickenwing! My favorite sculpey creation so far. He measures at about 2 1/2" high. He's another character in a larger sculpture that is very close to completion.

Scribbledoodle! Took me two hours while IMing people simultaneously. No pencil sketching involved, just straight Wacom tablet. It's Diana looking at a little trinket.

Vector and raster. Illustrator and Photoshop.

Back in business! No more vacations, moves or weddings for the summer. You know how long it had been since I've drawn a tweep? I didn't think I'd miss winter...but at least in winter I didn't have something going on every single weekend. Now hopefully I'll remember this when I'm staring at five feet of snow.

So, most of my art supplies, including my Wacom tablet are packed. On the bright side, while packing I've uncovered some interesting old pieces. This is an acrylic painting done for a class assignment that escapes me at the moment. I just had fun with the paint drippies.

Whew. I am still alive. Sitting here piling on the excuses for a lack of updates does not negate the lack of updates. Summer is just busy, especially if you've gone on a ten-day vacation, are packing and entire house, and working overtime.

These links are what I actually do for a living. These are library cards created for Gaylord Bros., Inc. I apologize because they lead you off site to the company's website.

I drew a widdle duck for MARML, and there's a few updates from the other girls...

6.5.07

Did a few updates to Mer's site at her request. Also added more of her photographs. I really enjoy the new images in the hand gallery.

MARML goes live

Here's one of the sites I've been working on. It's moving towards completion.

The Perils of Having Too Many Interests.

I take great pride in this web page, especially when old friends and strangers contact me about it. So it eats me every time I'm unable to post something new in order to keep everyone entertained. Right now though, I'm ankle-deep in one page, knee deep another, and doing a backfloat through a third. The first site is Centernia.com, a pet project of mine that hasn't launched yet, so don't bother looking. The second is a portfolio website for my photographer friend Merrilee. The third I'm super super excited about because it's finally coming to fruition. It's a collaboration website with the work of my four Art House sisters, and it has some great possibilities.

On top of these web projects, I've been devoting a great deal of time to writing. Sometimes my art feeds the text, sometimes it flows in reverse, and other times, as with now, the story demands itself to be told, and to hell with any other artistic pursuits.

So as not to leave you without eye candy, I have another website for you to take a glance at. I graduated with Alissa, she's an illustrator who was in many of my classes, including my 9am drawing class.

Happy Birthday, Pwyffels!

My illustrator friend John P. Wyffels just celebrated his birthday, so I thought I'd point people in the direction of his work. Pwyffels was my studio mentor, helping me carve out a space in the coveted upperclassmen illustration studio. He does this crazy woodburning painting stuff, and digital environmental work.

Process Work

I'm working on another website, which means I don't have much to show for it yet. Nothing drives me up the walls worse than not having updates, but I hate putting up rushed work. Here are two pages out of my sketchbook, a little backstage glimpse. I sketch in a hard red or blue pencil, usually the Verithin brand. Then I use a Micron pen or brush and Speedball ink to lay in the black lines. Once everything is scanned in, I use the Channels option in Photoshop to remove the sketch lines, no messy smudgy erasing necessary.

Polar bacteria...

I'm a bit behind the artistic eight ball this week since I had a guest this weekend. But here it is, the first of the promised polar bacteria illustrations. The other one will hopefully appear by this weekend. Though I must say, it's getting damn harder to draw miserable polar things when there's happy birds chirping outside my windows.

Happy St.Patty's Day!

This illustration has nothing to do with the holiday, minus the green sludgy pond. I'm a bit proud of this one. It was based on a comment I heard on NPR. You know, I might just accidentally become a political cartoonist one of these days.

What says the Ides of March more than....um....an amber fairy?

Damn tweeps, they get into everything. Including the cookies.

These were half-finished doodles that I finished quickly. And by the way, don't EVER buy a lamp made by Tensor. They have a terrible safety record that didn't correct itself after a class action lawsuit against them in 2001. Wish I had known that before I bought a lamp that short circuited and started smoking. And their customer service sucks royally.
Anywho, onto the art...

This one I can't even explain, she's got pink hair.

And this is just a schweepy tweep....

3.3.07

Where be the updates? I know I usually put something up in the beginning of the week, but I lapsed this week because I'm working on two websites simultaneously. Some good stuff coming, included a response to a challenge to make polar microbial bacteria cute.

In the meantime, I added a link to Jake Divine's photo website.

2.21.07

I really didn't plan on doing a mid-week illustration. But this came out of an afternoon meeting that just went on a downward spiral. Who said library and archival supplies weren't fun?

2.20.07

Here's a bit from the depths of my hardrive. My senior year they let me into some animation classes. I got to play with traditional animation equipment, it was ridiculously fun, and I'd KILL for the chance to do it again. This was my hand-drawn project. It's nothing meaningful and it sort of lacks a plot. The music is from Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens. The sound is a little slow on You Tube, if anyone wants to see the higher quality version I can send it to them.

Truth be told, Valentine's Day is one of my least favorite holidays. I think it's a stupid, commercialized event that makes more people feel lonely than loved. If I had my way, Valentine's day would be changed to a national day of community service. And instead of pouring all your money into flowers and chocolates, people could donate it to places that need it.

But yet, I am obligated to do something, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy mailing this. What's better than teasing your boyfriend with the promise of peanut buttery goodness?

And yes, I'm pissed about this blizzard dashing the hopes that have been raised over a stupid-over-commercialized event.

Another little polar bear...

2.04.07

So I have about a half dozen inked tweeps and a polar bear....just waiting to be colored. Instead, I ended up doing this illustration for Centernia :-) It was a speed illustration, sketch, ink, color in less than 20 hours, and I even slept and ate in that time.

I started writing the HTML for a new section with the art from Centernia, much of which I've never had on my websites!

The polar bears are growing. I've added about three new ones in the last two days.

The plight of the polar bears

An entire new gallery has been added!!! This one of not-so-happy polar bears. Polar Bears
